Dubai gives each home two bins, with barcodes to track waste

Dubai Municipality is replacing shared community bins with two bins for each home, each carrying an electronic barcode to track how much waste every household puts out. Emirates 24|7 reported the plan on Oct. 27, 2026, as part of the municipality's 'My City, My Environment' project.

Two bins per home, at the door

Each home gets one bin for general waste and one for recyclables, placed in front of the house instead of at a shared collection point. Collection companies scan the barcode when they empty a bin, and the process is documented with photos. The municipality says this lets it monitor collections and see how much waste each home produces.

Adel Al Marzouqi, executive director of the Waste and Sewerage Agency, said on Noor Dubai Radio that over time the data will show whether households are cutting their waste, and the homes that reduce the most will be recognised and honoured in the next phase. He said more details on the programme and how it will work will be announced soon.

Where it has started

Al Marzouqi said the new system already runs in several areas, including Jumeirah, Al Barsha North and Al Mizhar 1 and 2. The municipality has now begun handing out the new bins in the Al Mizhar Fourth District.

Why the shared bins are going

The municipality says shared containers caused problems: some residents did not want them near their homes, others found them too far away, and people from outside the neighbourhood also used them, adding pressure on the bins and hurting the look and cleanliness of residential streets.

Details of the next phase, including how waste-reducing homes will be recognised, have not yet been announced; residents should watch for the municipality's formal update.
