RTA Director-General Mattar Al Tayer announced on October 13 that Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority is studying an integrated underground transport system for people, goods and services.
Why it matters
If built, Dubai would gain a three-dimensional "sky–land–underground" mobility network, a key plank of its planning for 2040 travel demand.
Full report
Speaking at the "Shaping Dubai's Mobility Future in Three Dimensions" session of the Mohammed bin Rashid Leadership Forum, Al Tayer said the RTA is studying an integrated underground transport system to move people, goods and services, stressing the role of technology and AI in the future of transport. Dubai's roads already carry more than 11 million trips a day, expected to double by 2040.
Groundwork is already in place: the Dubai Metro Gold Line, the city's first fully underground metro line opening in September 2032, is under construction, and Elon Musk's Boring Company Dubai Loop tunnel system is also advancing.
