Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced on October 25 that the final bridge of the World Trade Centre Roundabout project will open on Friday, October 30, completing the rework of a key junction in central Dubai.
The new bridge's scale and route
The new bridge is 1,000 metres long with two lanes and a capacity of about 3,000 vehicles per hour, serving traffic travelling from Al Majlis Street towards 2nd December Street. The authority says the journey on that stretch will fall from six minutes to about one minute, a tangible improvement for daily commuters through the junction.
The project as a whole
The World Trade Centre Roundabout project comprises five bridges with a combined length of 5,000 metres and cost about Dh696 million. According to the authority's figures, once complete the project cuts delays at the junction from 12 minutes to 90 seconds, provides free-flowing traffic in all directions and serves 500,000 people.
For Dubai drivers, the opening should visibly ease the bottleneck around the World Trade Centre at peak times; the authority had already opened the project's other bridges in stages, and the final bridge marks the formal completion of the whole scheme.
