A gunman opened fire in and around a home in Erie, Pennsylvania on Friday evening. Two women were found shot dead in the street; the shooter barricaded himself inside and was later found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after a SWAT standoff.

Why it matters

One of the deadliest US shootings in recent years unfolded Friday evening in Erie, Pennsylvania: local media report 9 dead including the gunman, with two children and a pregnant woman among the victims. The City of Erie confirmed the shooter is dead and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

What happened

Police were called around 4:52 p.m. Friday to the 700 block of Perry Street near East 7th Street on Erie's east side. Officers arriving at the scene found two women lying in the street, both fatally shot.

The gunman, armed with a handgun, barricaded himself inside the residence, prompting a standoff with SWAT officers. Local television reported additional gunshots coming from inside the home during the standoff. Police eventually entered and found the suspect dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, along with more victims throughout the house.

Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah called it "one of the most difficult and heartbreaking scenes" his officers had ever encountered, declining details out of respect for the victims. Police have not released the identities of the dead, the gunman's relationship to the victims, or a motive; the investigation continues.

Casualties

Erie News Now and Pittsburgh station WPXI reported 9 dead in total, including two children, a pregnant woman, and the gunman. Police have not confirmed the exact death toll, saying only that "multiple people, including the suspected shooter" were killed.
