Although the ceasefire that took effect last October 10 halted the heaviest fighting, Israeli strikes have continued and key elements of the truce remain stalled.
The latest numbers
The ministry, part of the Hamas-led government in Gaza, says 1,145 Palestinians have been killed since the ceasefire began; seven Israeli soldiers have been killed in the same period. Its detailed records are viewed as generally reliable by U.N. agencies. It does not distinguish between civilians and militants but says women and children make up around half the toll. On Sunday, Palestinian officials said an Israeli strike in the Muwasi area of Khan Younis killed one person and wounded three.
Ceasefire stalled
Other aspects of the U.S.-brokered ceasefire remain largely stalled: Israeli forces now control over half of the Palestinian territory, Hamas has not disarmed, a new Palestinian government has not arrived, and reconstruction has not begun. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israeli forces will not withdraw until Hamas disarms. Israel holds elections next month — the first since the October 7, 2023 attacks, widely seen as a referendum on the security failures that led to them; leading opposition parties pledged Saturday evening to unite to defeat Netanyahu's coalition.

The World Health Organization says almost 700 people in Yemen have been killed since an escalation in fighting last month, with more than 130,000 displaced. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran has not been formally notified of Washington's response after President Trump rejected Iran's proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and resume negotiations; Iran is awaiting a U.S. answer through mediators.
