Geely Auto announced on Oct 9 it is entering the Canadian market, with a local team in place and a retail and service network under development. First cars go on sale in 2027; no models, prices or dealer locations revealed yet.

Why it matters

Another major Chinese automaker is formally entering Canada, after Ottawa cut its 100% tariff on Chinese-built EVs to just 6.1% for the first 49,000 units. For Canadian consumers it could mean more affordable electric options; for the domestic auto industry and dealer network, new competitive pressure.

Full report

Geely Auto officially announced its entry into the Canadian market on October 9, calling it the next chapter in the brand's international expansion. With a Canadian team now in place, the company is establishing local operations and developing a retail and service network, ahead of introducing its first vehicles to Canadian consumers in 2027. A website at geely.ca is live, but no models, prices or dealer locations have been announced — details will follow closer to launch.

Bryan Wu, managing director of Geely Auto Canada, said Canada represents an important next step in Geely Auto's international growth, entering with a long-term commitment and bringing global technology and engineering capabilities to Canadian drivers. He added that "trust is earned over time, and we are committed to earning it here." The company says it is building the network with "highly trusted and experienced partners who understand their local communities," which industry watchers read as a traditional franchised-dealer model rather than Tesla-style direct sales.

Background

Geely Auto Group sold more than 3.02 million vehicles globally in 2025, including nearly 1.69 million new-energy vehicles, and over 2.23 million in the first nine months of 2026. Its parent, Zhejiang Geely Holding, also owns Volvo Cars, Polestar and Lotus — so Geely-built cars have long been on Canadian roads, just under Swedish and British badges. This is the first time the Geely name itself comes to Canada. Export-market candidates include the EX5 electric SUV and the Starray EM-i plug-in hybrid, though nothing is confirmed.

BYD has already confirmed plans for Canada and Chery has plans as well, making Geely the latest Chinese brand to go official. Job listings for Geely's Zeekr and Lynk & Co brands have appeared in Canada in recent months, and lightly disguised EX5 and EX2 test vehicles were spotted on Canadian roads after the tariff deal was announced.
