Why it matters
Google announced on October 20 that Gemini's Personal Intelligence feature is coming to cars: it goes live on Android Auto starting today (October 21), with Google built-in vehicles to follow in the coming months.
What it can do
Once authorized by the user, in-car Gemini can read Gmail, Calendar, Google Photos, Maps, YouTube and Search history to give personalized answers: for example, checking a flight's gate and on-time status (reading the Gmail confirmation), saying "take me to the doctor" to navigate to the address in the calendar, or finding last week's car-wash photo in Photos to navigate there.
Privacy and availability
The feature is off by default; personalized answers are only provided while the phone is connected to the vehicle, and each app can be toggled in the Gemini app's settings. It covers personal Google accounts of users 18 and older worldwide (work and education Workspace accounts excluded); excluded regions are the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the UK and Nigeria.
