Hong Kong Q3 share sales hit record $47.5 billion on AI capital rush

· N GLOBE

IPOs, placements and block trades raised $47.5 billion in July–September, the biggest Q3 haul ever; year-to-date fundraising tops $92 billion, nearing the $112.5 billion full-year record of 2021.

Why it matters

Hong Kong's fundraising machine roared back this summer. IPOs, placements and block trades raised a record $47.5 billion in July–September — the biggest quarterly haul ever — even as the city's stocks suffered a bruising selloff. Bankers barely took a summer break, according to Bloomberg. Year-to-date equity fundraising has topped $92 billion, putting the city within reach of the $112.5 billion full-year record set in 2021.

Key figures

Alibaba Group's $10.2 billion follow-on offering was the quarter's largest transaction. Zhongji Innolight raised almost $8 billion in Hong Kong's largest listing in nearly seven years, while AI model maker Z.AI has raised $9.6 billion this year through its IPO, placements and convertible bonds. Across Asia-Pacific, third-quarter share sales exceeded $120 billion — the most for the period in six years.

Context

Chinese technology companies tapping investors for capital to fund AI expansion drove the boom. Bloomberg notes, however, that a recent surge in bond yields and poor post-listing performance are making investors and issuers more cautious.
