China Mobile Hong Kong announced on Oct. 18 that it has built Hong Kong's first U6GHz (Upper 6GHz) network, completing testing and validation at its Mong Kok flagship store. The spectrum was auctioned on Nov. 29, 2024 — Hong Kong was the first jurisdiction in the world to auction 6/7GHz for public mobile services — with CMHK winning 100 MHz of contiguous spectrum for HKD 210 million. The company says carrier aggregation with existing bands can deliver download speeds up to 3 Gbps (company-provided, not independently verified). U6GHz is seen as key spectrum for 5G-Advanced and future 6G.

Why it matters

China Mobile Hong Kong (CMHK) announced on Oct. 18 that it has taken the lead in realizing a U6GHz network, successfully completing network testing and validation at its Mong Kok flagship store and advancing exploration of Upper 6GHz applications in mobile networks. U6GHz offers continuous wide bandwidth and is a crucial spectrum resource supporting 5G-Advanced evolution and future 6G development; the company says the move lays a foundation for Hong Kong's future 6G commercialization.

Spectrum and technical details

Hong Kong completed its 6/7GHz spectrum auction on Nov. 29, 2024, becoming the first region globally to auction the band for public mobile services; CMHK won 100 MHz of contiguous spectrum (6570-6670 MHz) for HKD 210 million, while HKT and SmarTone each secured 100 MHz blocks, raising HKD 630 million in total. The company says the new spectrum can be combined with existing frequency holdings via carrier aggregation for theoretical download speeds up to 3 Gbps (company-provided figure, not independently verified); it disclosed no commercial launch date, coverage area, site count or equipment supplier. On the same day, China Telecom (Macau) announced it had installed a U6G demonstration base station and begun field trials.
