· N GLOBE

The Hospital Authority announced on Oct. 20 that Sino Group and the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation have jointly donated HK$30 million to build two dedicated cataract surgery theatres at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Ambulatory Care Centre site, due in service in Q4 2027.

Why it matters

Hong Kong's Hospital Authority (HA) announced on October 20, 2026 that it has received a combined donation of HK$30 million from Sino Group and the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation to build two operating theatres dedicated to cataract surgery at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Ambulatory Care Centre site in Kowloon. HA chairman Henry Fan said the project aligns with the Policy Address and will help shorten waiting times for cataract surgery.

Construction began in August 2026 and the theatres are expected to enter service in the fourth quarter of 2027. After Queen Elizabeth Hospital relocates to Kai Tak, Kowloon City will host Hong Kong's first integrated day hospital, including a high-volume day cataract surgery centre capable of about 5,500 cataract operations a year.

Full report

Cataracts are a common condition among Hong Kong's elderly, and waiting times for the surgery in public hospitals have long been a public concern. The HA said the new dedicated theatres and the future day surgery centre will boost throughput through a day-surgery model, letting more patients receive treatment sooner.
