Immigration figures show about 898,000 cross-boundary movements by 9pm on Oct 1; MTR exits near Victoria Harbour were briefly closed for fireworks crowd control.

Why it matters

Immigration Department figures show that by 9pm on National Day, October 1, Hong Kong recorded about 898,000 cross-boundary movements, including around 270,000 mainland visitors — exceeding the 232,751 mainland arrivals on National Day last year and marking a strong start to the seven-day Golden Week.

Full report

According to local media citing Immigration Department figures, total cross-boundary movements reached about 898,000 by 9pm on October 1. Of 521,607 arrivals, roughly 270,000 were mainland visitors; of 376,146 departures, about 238,000 were Hong Kong residents. The department had earlier forecast about 1.29 million mainland visitor trips over the seven-day Golden Week (October 1–7), with average daily arrivals up more than 5% from last year.

For the 8pm National Day fireworks display over Victoria Harbour, police imposed crowd-control arrangements on both sides of the harbour. Selected exits at MTR stations including Tsim Sha Tsui, East Tsim Sha Tsui, Austin, Jordan, Exhibition Centre and the West Kowloon high-speed rail terminus were temporarily closed and all reopened by 9:54pm. The day also featured a flag-raising ceremony at Golden Bauhinia Square and a National Day reception at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Industry reaction

Travel industry figures said hotel occupancy in traditionally popular districts such as Tsim Sha Tsui, Causeway Bay and Central exceeded 90%, with room rates up about 10–20% from normal levels, reflecting concentrated Golden Week demand.
