Hong Kong August retail sales rose 5.6% year on year to HK$32.1 billion, a 16th straight month of gains; visitor arrivals up 5.9%.

Why it matters

The August figure extends the retail sector's winning streak to 16 months, underlining resilient household spending even as the July pace cooled. For the first eight months of 2026, total retail sales value rose 8.5% from a year earlier. A government spokesperson said "sustained economic expansion and rising labour earnings should support local consumption sentiment and spending," with growth in visitor arrivals expected to further inject vibrancy into the sector.
