Hong Kong Star Ferry Fares to Rise from Jan 25, 2027: Weekday Trips Up HK$1 at Most, HK$190 Monthly Ticket Unchanged

The Chief Executive in Council has approved fare increases for Star Ferry's two franchised routes: weekday single trips up HK$0.6–1.0, weekend trips up HK$1.0–1.8, with adult upper-deck fares capped at HK$6 on weekdays and HK$8.3 on weekends. The HK$190 monthly ticket stays unchanged, effective January 25, 2027.
Why it matters
The Star Ferry is the iconic cross-harbour link for daily commuters and tourists alike, so any fare change moves the cost of getting across Victoria Harbour. The government moderated the increase below what the operator asked for and froze the monthly ticket — shielding regular commuters from part of the hike.
Full report
The Hong Kong government announced on October 21 that the Chief Executive in Council has approved fare adjustments for Star Ferry's two franchised routes (Central–Tsim Sha Tsui and Wan Chai–Tsim Sha Tsui). The new tariffs take effect on January 25, 2027, and will be submitted to the Legislative Council for vetting on October 28.
Under the approved scheme, weekday single-trip fares rise by HK$0.6 to HK$1.0, and weekend single trips by HK$1.0 to HK$1.8. Adult upper-deck fares are capped at HK$6 on weekdays and HK$8.3 on weekends. The HK$190 monthly ticket remains unchanged. The government said Star Ferry had originally requested increases of HK$0.8 to HK$2.0 per trip, and the approved rises were moderated to balance the operator's viability with passengers' burden.
The backdrop is long-running losses: Star Ferry recorded cumulative losses of more than HK$100 million between 2018 and 2023, patronage has recovered slowly, and rising operating costs and debt interest are expected to push it back into the red from 2026.
