Hong Kong's Kai Tak Hospital opens in phases from today, starting with family medicine centre

· N GLOBE

Hong Kong's largest public hospital begins phased services today; the Family Medicine Integrated Centre opens with around 250 daily quotas initially. Health Secretary Lo Chung-mau inspected the hospital today and tested the rail-to-bus link himself.

Why it matters

With 2,400 beds and about 500,000 sq m of floor space, Kai Tak Hospital is Hong Kong's largest public hospital. Its phased opening, serving about 1.8 million people across Kowloon City, Wong Tai Sin, Kwun Tong and Yau Tsim Mong, marks the start of a major reshaping of the Kowloon Central healthcare network.

Full report

The Hospital Authority announced that Kai Tak Hospital will commence services in two phases from October 5. The first phase opens the Family Medicine Integrated Centre on the first floor of the Specialist Out-patient Clinic Block, initially providing around 250 family medicine quotas per day; patients with episodic illnesses can book via the "HA Go" mobile app or the telephone booking system from the morning of October 4.

From late October, specialist out-patient services in medicine, surgery, neurosurgery and clinical oncology will transfer from Queen Elizabeth Hospital in batches; allied health, pharmacy, pathology, diagnostic radiology and the patient resource centre will also roll out gradually in October. Major clinical services including in-patient, surgical and accident-and-emergency services belong to the second phase, expected in 2028.

Secretary for Health Lo Chung-mau, who inspected the hospital today, told reporters he had travelled there by MTR from Admiralty to Kai Tak Station and then one bus, finding the journey convenient. He acknowledged that a new hospital in a new development area would take the public time to adjust to.
