West Kowloon officers arrested seven men and nine women aged 19 to 54 in operations "Thunderbolt 2026" and "Sharp Division" on October 8-9, seizing more than HK$14 million in cash and freezing over HK$5 million in suspected crime proceeds.

Why it matters

Hong Kong police smashed a transnational prostitution syndicate in operations codenamed "Thunderbolt 2026" and "Sharp Division" on October 8 and 9, arresting 16 people — seven men and nine women aged 19 to 54. Officers seized more than HK$14 million in cash and froze four bank accounts held in personal names containing over HK$5 million in suspected crime proceeds.

How the ring worked

After months of investigation, police say the network recruited women in Southeast Asian countries, provided them with air tickets and lodged them in hotels in Tsim Sha Tsui. The syndicate advertised on online channels with photographs and videos, and supplied materials for prostitution including lubricants, condoms and disposable bedsheets and towels. Officers arrested two core members at a Tuen Mun flat used as an operations centre, raided two further units to seize another core member, and arrested nine foreign sex workers in nine Tsim Sha Tsui hotel rooms. The four core members were three local men who are brothers and one Thai man; other detainees included two local men and one foreigner — one claimed to be a businessman, one a courier and one in property management, while the rest said they were unemployed.

Alleged offences

The detainees face alleged offences including breach of condition of stay, trafficking persons into or out of Hong Kong, control over persons for the purpose of prostitution, living on the earnings of prostitution of others, and money laundering. Source: Dimsum Daily.
