The storm briefly strengthened into a Category 3 hurricane earlier Friday before weakening slightly to a Category 2, with maximum sustained winds near 105 mph (169 km/h). Forecasters warned it could strengthen again before landfall.
Landfall is expected late Friday night or early Saturday (Oct 9–10) along the northern Gulf Coast. The storm's impact was already being felt, with dangerous surf and powerful winds, and tens of thousands of people evacuated. Georgia declared a state of emergency; damaging wind gusts were also expected in northern Georgia, the southern Appalachians and southern middle Tennessee.
