Iran's top diplomat: 'No military solution' to U.S.–Iran war as Hormuz tanker hit

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told foreign ambassadors on Sunday that there is no military solution and no solution based on new sanctions to the U.S.–Iran war, while a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz was struck by an unknown projectile.
Why it matters
Iran's top diplomat is ruling out both further military action and tougher sanctions as a way out of the months-long U.S.–Iran conflict, while warning Tehran's response to any new confrontation would be "stronger than before." His remarks come the same day a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz was hit by an unknown projectile, keeping the energy corridor at the center of the standoff.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told a gathering of foreign ambassadors in Tehran on Sunday: "There is no military solution, nor any solution based on new sanctions" to the conflict — only "negotiations based on justice and fairness" could end it, according to AFP reporting carried by multiple outlets.
Araghchi warned that if enemies "again choose the path of military confrontation, our response will be stronger than before."
The war was launched by the United States and Israel in late February 2026. Heavy bombardment failed to bring a decisive close, and Washington has recently dialed back military operations in favor of economic pressure.
The main sticking point remains Iran's attempt to blockade the Strait of Hormuz, through which a large share of the world's oil flows. On Sunday, the UK maritime security agency UKMTO reported that a tanker in the strait was "struck by an unknown projectile," damaging the engine room. The crew is safe and no environmental impact has been recorded.
The two sides agreed a memorandum of understanding in June on a framework for a permanent resolution, but Iranian attacks on vessels prompted a return to U.S. military operations.
