Iran says diplomacy is the only way after Trump rejects Hormuz reopening plan

Iran's foreign minister said Sunday that Tehran remains committed to a diplomatic solution after U.S. President Donald Trump rejected a seven-day plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, insisting the strait's reopening depends on agreed conditions being met through negotiations.

President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House on Saturday that he had rejected Iran's seven-day plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, calling Tehran's terms "not acceptable." Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded Sunday that Tehran remains committed to a diplomatic solution — "diplomacy is the only way" — and that reopening the strait depends on Washington fulfilling the agreed conditions through negotiations.

What the plan offered

Iran conveyed the proposal to the United States through Qatari mediators during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York. Under it, Iran said it could restore normal maritime passage through the strait within seven days and restart nuclear talks if the U.S. lifted its naval blockade of Iranian ports, waived sanctions on Iranian oil sales, released some frozen Iranian assets, and observed a ceasefire covering the wider region, including Lebanon.

Trump said Iran is "losing so badly" and only wants a deal to reopen the strait, while claiming 29 vessels carrying oil passed through the night before. The Wall Street Journal, citing U.S. officials, reported that Trump is skeptical of the ceasefire proposal and is leaving open the possibility of resuming strikes on Iran after the November midterm elections.

Context

The Strait of Hormuz carries roughly 20%–25% of the world's seaborne oil. Reuters reported this week that only 17 commodity vessels crossed the strait over one weekend, compared with a pre-war average of about 125 vessels a day. Analysts warn that energy prices are unlikely to stabilize while the strait remains effectively closed to most commercial traffic.
