Maextro V800 brake pedal brackets snap in three tests; JAC shares slide for two days, wiping about 11 billion yuan in value

· N GLOBE

A test video released Oct 8 by auto platform Dongchedi shows all three Huawei-JAC Maextro V800 luxury MPVs suffering brake pedal bracket fractures in 100 km/h emergency braking tests. JAC shares have fallen for two straight days; Maextro pledges a redesigned bracket and free upgrades for owners.

Why it matters

The brake pedal is a vehicle's most critical safety component, and three consecutive bracket failures at the same location raise questions about design validation. The Maextro V800 is the flagship of Huawei's Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance (HIMA), priced above 1 million yuan at the top end — the incident has hit JAC's share price and brand credibility, and is part of the broader quality conversation around Chinese automakers' global push.

Full report

Chinese auto platform Dongchedi (owned by ByteDance) released a test video on October 8 reporting that three brand-new Maextro V800 MPVs suffered brake pedal bracket fractures during 100 km/h-to-zero emergency braking tests: the first on its third full-force stop, the second on its fourth, and a third, newly purchased vehicle on its second. Testers said the foot brake became completely inoperative after fracture, leaving only Park-gear emergency braking; data cited showed pedal force of 1,612 newtons at the moment of failure on one car, below the national standard requiring a pedal to withstand 2,000 newtons for five seconds. The video quickly trended on Chinese social media.

Maextro responded by announcing a redesign of the brake pedal bracket base and free upgrades for existing owners, plus a review of design validation, testing parameters and production quality management. JAC Motors (600418.SH) said it is aware of the matter and is investigating with multi-party tests, promising an official statement once results are available. Note: the failure analysis so far comes from the testing team; no official investigation findings have been released.

Market reaction

JAC shares hit their daily lower limit on October 8 (down 10.01% to 24.72 yuan), and Caixin reported on October 9 that the two-day slide has wiped about 11 billion yuan from the company's market value. The V800 launched in August at 766,000–1,016,000 yuan, targeting the Toyota Alphard-class luxury MPV segment.
