Renesas Launches 22nm Flagship MCUs RX74M / RX74N, Mass Production Underway

The first RX-family MCUs on a 22nm process with embedded MRAM: 600 MHz core, over 2x the performance of the previous generation, announced and in production Oct 22.
Why it matters
Renesas Electronics on Oct 22 launched its flagship 32-bit microcontrollers RX74M and RX74N, with mass production starting the same day. It is the first RX lineup built on a 22nm process and the first to embed MRAM (magnetoresistive RAM): MRAM retains data without power and needs no erase-before-write step, combining flash-like non-volatility with SRAM-like write speed — a generational leap for industrial automation and smart metering, where reliability is paramount.
Details
Both parts run a 600 MHz RXv3e CPU core, delivering more than twice the processing performance of the previous-generation 240 MHz RX72M/RX72N. Memory: 1 MB MRAM, 256 KB of zero-wait-state tightly coupled memory (TCM), and 1.5 MB SRAM.
The split is clear: RX74M targets factory automation — integrating an EtherCAT slave controller, a TSN-capable Gigabit Ethernet switch and CAN-FD for AC drives, PLCs and robots; RX74N targets smart meters and HVAC systems.
On security, the new “ProtectZone” hardware architecture and an updated Renesas Secure IP support post-quantum cryptography (PQC) algorithms, aligned with Europe's Cyber Resilience Act — a direct plus for industrial equipment makers exporting to Europe.
