Samsung Orders More 2nm Tools for Taylor, Texas Fab, Targets 20,000 Wafers a Month by H2 2027

Industry reports say Samsung has placed fresh 2nm equipment orders for its Taylor, Texas fab, adding about 6,000 wafers a month of capacity; total installed 2nm capacity could hit 20,000 wpm in H2 2027, filling Fab 1's remaining cleanroom space.
Why it matters
This is a key step in Samsung's foundry push to catch up with TSMC. The new tools reportedly add about 6,000 wafers a month of 2nm capacity; combined with earlier orders of around 10,000 wpm plus a pilot line, Taylor Fab 1's total installed 2nm capacity is expected to reach 20,000 wafers a month in H2 2027 — the fab's design ceiling, filling its remaining cleanroom space. Tools are expected to arrive from late 2026, with shipments ramping up in H2 2027.
Confirmed demand is already in hand: Tesla signed a $16.5B deal in July 2025 for Samsung to make its AI5/AI6 chips through 2033, and Broadcom is another known Taylor customer. Samsung's 2nm yields have reportedly improved from about 60% early this year to around 80%.
Full report
According to South Korea's ZDNet Korea, citing industry sources, and cross-reported on Oct 23 by DIGITIMES, TweakTown and Wccftech, the new 2nm equipment is destined for Taylor Fab 1. The plant represents about $37B of investment in central Texas, with up to $4.745B in direct subsidies under the US CHIPS Act.
The foundry market remains highly concentrated: TrendForce's Q2 data put TSMC at 72.5% of global foundry revenue versus 5.9% for Samsung. Reaching 20,000 wpm of 2nm at Taylor with healthy yields would be a major lever for Samsung's foundry turnaround.
Caveat: the order and the 20,000-wpm target are industry-source reports, not yet confirmed by Samsung; 20,000 is installed capacity, not current output, and volume production progress remains to be verified.
