Lagos Ajah–Lekki Begging Crackdown: 62 Arrested, Including 33 Children

The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps arrested 62 people in Ajah and Lekki, including 29 street beggars and 33 children allegedly exploited for street begging.
Why it matters
This is the second mass enforcement operation in Lagos within days, and the presence of 33 children raises a child-protection question: whether the children were exploited by adults, and what happens to them next, will determine whether the raids treat the symptom or the cause.
Full report
LAGOS — Operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI) arrested 62 people during an enforcement operation in the Ajah and Lekki areas, including 29 street beggars and 33 children allegedly being exploited for illegal street begging. The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed the development in a statement published Monday; all those apprehended have been transferred to the appropriate authorities.
The official statement did not say whether any of the adults arrested were suspected of recruiting, transporting, or otherwise exploiting the children, nor did it clarify where the children were taken, which agencies assumed custody, or what protection, rehabilitation, or family-tracing arrangements would follow.
Days earlier, the corps arrested 215 street beggars in a separate operation across Lagos — 152 males, 46 females, and 17 young adults. Wahab said the exercises are part of the state government's broader efforts to maintain public order, improve environmental sanitation, and create safer, more orderly public spaces.
