Lagos State Police Command says an Assistant Superintendent of Police has been disarmed and detained after a shooting in Ajegunle killed two-year-old Omole Taiwo and injured another girl; the case has gone to the State Criminal Investigation Department.

The Lagos State Police Command confirmed on Saturday, 7 November, that an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) has been disarmed and detained over a shooting in Ajegunle that killed a two-year-old girl and injured another, with the case transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).

What happened

The incident happened between 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Thursday, 5 November, in the Nosamu area of Ajegunle. According to a statement by the Command's spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, officers from the Ajeromi Police Station responded to a distress call about a violent clash between two rival groups, the Nosamu Boys and the Alayabiagba Boys, reportedly linked to disputes over toll collection.

Two girls were hit by gunfire during the operation. Two-year-old Omole Taiwo was first taken to Ajeromi General Hospital and then transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) in Ikeja, where she later died. The other girl was injured and is receiving treatment.

Officer detained; case handed to investigators

Police confirmed the officer involved is ASP Omotayo Olajide, who has been disarmed and detained, while the case has been taken over by the State Criminal Investigation Department to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police CP Tijani Fatai expressed sadness over the incident, describing the officer's detention and the transfer of the case to the SCID as necessary steps towards a thorough and impartial investigation. The incident has raised concern among residents about the safety of innocent people during police operations.
