The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency said that in the early hours of October 28, an articulated truck carrying a 20-foot container lost control on Berger Bridge along the Ibeju-Lekki Expressway and overturned onto an interstate bus, killing four adult males at the scene; the injured were taken to Epe General Hospital, and the agency also handled two other road incidents in Agege and Igando the same day.

A fatal road crash struck Lagos in the early hours of October 28. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said an articulated truck carrying a 20-foot container collided with an interstate Toyota Hiace bus, registration GME-589 ZU, on Berger Bridge along the Ibeju-Lekki Expressway, inward Eleko, and then overturned onto the bus, killing four adult males at the scene.

Preliminary findings: speeding uphill, loss of control

Preliminary findings indicated that the truck was travelling uphill at excessive speed when its driver lost control while attempting to avoid a collision, causing the truck and its container to overturn onto the bus. LASEMA's Beta Whales Team from the Epe Base was deployed after a distress call and worked with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nigeria Police Force to secure the scene, give first aid and take the injured to Epe General Hospital; a private crane was arranged to lift the overturned truck and container so responders could safely recover the bodies, and traffic controls were put in place around the affected section.

Injury figures differ between reports; two other incidents the same day

Readers should note that the injury figure differs between reports: several outlets quoting LASEMA's statement put the injured at 16, while the News Agency of Nigeria, quoting LASEMA Permanent Secretary Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, put it at six. This site reports the death toll of four, on which all accounts agree, and treats the injury figure as pending an updated official statement. The agency also handled two other incidents on Wednesday: at about 4:09 a.m., a truck registered KTU-940XT crashed into a solar-powered streetlight pole near Vetland School, inward Agege Pen Cinema, along Old Abeokuta Road, with no casualties; and a DAF truck, reportedly driving against traffic after congestion caused by a broken-down vehicle, collided with a Toyota Corolla at Lanre Bus Stop, inward Igando, leaving the Corolla driver with a minor head injury, treated at Igando General Hospital. The Lagos State Government expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
