The Lagos State Government has announced a state-wide cleanliness competition across its 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) — 57 councils in total — to promote community-led environmental hygiene and recognise the cleanest localities. The First Lady, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, wife of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, disclosed the initiative on Saturday, October 31, during the October monthly environmental sanitation monitoring exercise in Ikorodu.
Beyond the last Saturday of the month: residents urged to sustain hygiene
Sanwo-Olu urged Ikorodu residents to sustain the sanitation exercise beyond the last Saturday of every month, to work towards emerging as the cleanest local government in the state, and to dispose of waste properly. In the same monitoring round, the state government also stepped up refuse collection across the state and warned residents against dumping refuse into canals and drainage channels, saying the practice obstructs water flow, worsens flooding and harms environmental health.
