Lagos e-hailing drivers begin indefinite strike over fares and commissions

· N GLOBE

The AUATON union called an open-ended shutdown from Monday, demanding fairer fares, lower commissions and better driver welfare.

Why it matters

Lagos is Nigeria's largest ride-hailing market, and an indefinite driver shutdown will directly affect commuters across the city; the strike's scale and duration are worth watching.

Full report

The Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON) has declared an indefinite strike by e-hailing drivers in Lagos State, effective Monday, October 12, until meaningful progress is made on its demands. The union's notice was disclosed to media on Saturday; AUATON is an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

The union cited long-standing grievances over fare calculations, high platform commissions, unexpected deductions, and driver safety and welfare. "Our members can no longer sustain their families or maintain their vehicles under the current system," a senior AUATON official said.

AUATON appealed to fleet owners and managers to suspend daily remittance targets and related performance requirements for the strike's duration, and said monitoring teams have been deployed across all local government areas in Lagos; drivers found operating in violation could face internal disciplinary measures.

Lagos State chairman Jaiyesimi Olalabi Azeez said the union's goal is not to halt commerce but to secure fairer conditions that keep experienced drivers in the sector and vehicles properly maintained, adding the union is ready for constructive dialogue.
