Lagos first in line as Nigeria launches 24/7 power pilot for commercial corridors

Nigeria's federal government and Lagos State have agreed to cooperate on Tinubu-approved 24/7 Energy Zones pilot, starting with the Lagos corridor, to deliver stable round-the-clock electricity.

Why it matters

Nigeria's federal government and Lagos State have agreed to work together on a pilot scheme aimed at delivering stable 24-hour electricity to the country's busiest commercial corridor — a long-standing promise for households and businesses battered by chronic blackouts.

Full report

The agreement, part of the 24/7 Energy Zones pilot approved by President Bola Tinubu, followed a high-level technical session at Lagos House, Marina, between the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, ministry leadership and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The pilot will start in Lagos and later extend to the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano and Enugu-Port Harcourt corridors, covering Nigeria's major commercial and industrial hubs. Tegbe said the ministry has secured commitments from distribution companies to take on more power and deliver steady, reliable electricity along the Lagos corridor.

He said he was ready to work with Lagos on four ministerial priority areas: grid stabilisation, market liquidity, grid expansion, and governance and regulatory harmonisation. Sanwo-Olu said Lagos is equally committed and stressed pragmatic solutions to make the sector work for Nigerians, creating what he called a bankable, collaborative and competitive electricity market.
