Lagos airport cargo terminal tightens security with biometrics, facial recognition and vehicle tracking

FAAN is tightening access at the Pilgrims and Cargo Terminal of Lagos's Murtala Muhammed International Airport, introducing biometric checks, facial recognition, vehicle tracking and stricter documentation to cut congestion and unauthorized access.
Why it matters
Lagos's Murtala Muhammed International Airport handles most of Nigeria's air cargo. Tightening access at its Pilgrims and Cargo Terminal is meant to cut congestion, curb smuggling and unauthorized access, and speed up exports — including perishable goods that currently sit for weeks before shipment.
What is changing
Only registered, verified and authorized persons, businesses and vehicles will be allowed into designated areas of the terminal. FAAN's Integrated Cargo Stakeholder Registry will serve as the main reference for verifying cargo operators, while biometric identification, facial recognition, fingerprint verification and electronic access records are introduced.
Phase One installs Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras and boom barriers on two of the four lanes at Gate One, plus CCTV for surveillance, monitoring and investigations. An X-ray scanner for baggage and parcels will strengthen security screening.
The Director of Cargo Development and Services, Lekan Thomas, briefed key government agencies operating at the terminal on the new measures, including the Nigeria Customs Service, NDLEA, NAFDAC, the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service, Police EOD, DSS, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria and Federal Produce Inspection Services.
FAAN says the measures are not intended to restrict legitimate cargo operations, and has urged all stakeholders to complete the required registration and documentation ahead of full enforcement.
