Why it matters

Felabration, the annual festival celebrating Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, runs from October 12 to 18 at the New Afrika Shrine in Ikeja, Lagos, honouring his musical, political and cultural legacy. This year's theme is "Who Are You", with a programme spanning music, art, fashion, dance and discussions.

Lineup

According to the official Felabration Facebook page, headline performances come from Femi Kuti & The Positive Force, Made Kuti, and Seun Kuti & Egypt 80. Guest artistes include Apala exponent Musiliu Haruna Ishola, Terry Apala, Atawewe and Ice Prince, alongside Slimcase, Kleva Jay, Ceeza Milli, T.Classic, Sunkey Snoop, Soundboi and Labule, with more acts to be announced.

The Dress Fela fashion show on Saturday kicked off the festivities ahead of the main programme, highlighting the continued influence of Fela's bold prints, loose-fitting trousers and beads on contemporary fashion. Yeni Kuti, co-manager of the New Afrika Shrine, said the festival promotes Nigerian culture and preserves the Afrobeat pioneer's legacy: "If you come to the Shrine, you see people from all over the world."

Established in 1998, Felabration has grown from music performances into a week-long cultural celebration that also includes art, school debates and fashion, drawing music enthusiasts from across Nigeria and beyond to Lagos.
