The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) announced on Wednesday, October 14, that the Lagos State Government has approved the controlled demolition of the fire-ravaged 25-storey Great Nigeria Insurance House on Martins Street, Lagos Island. The immediate surroundings will be cordoned off and access restricted throughout the operation, with temporary traffic diversions on adjoining streets, plus noise and dust. LASEMA urged residents, traders, business owners and motorists to avoid the area where possible, use alternative routes and comply with emergency responders and traffic officials. The agency said the exercise will follow global best practices, coordinated with other state agencies.

Background: on December 24, 2025, a devastating fire engulfed the commercial high-rise, which housed traders selling and storing clothing, shoes and bags. The blaze spread rapidly, part of the building collapsed, at least three bodies were recovered and several people were injured. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu visited the scene on December 25 and ordered the demolition; the state government later directed occupants around the damaged structure to leave.
