Staff and patients at P and G Hospital in Abule-Egba, Lagos State, stopped a woman who allegedly faked pregnancy to steal a newborn; the suspect is in police custody while officers hunt her fleeing accomplice, police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi confirmed.

Why it matters

This is another attempted newborn theft at a Lagos hospital in recent years. The alertness of staff and patients stopped the baby from being taken, but it also exposes gaps in newborn security at hospitals.

Full report

The incident happened on Saturday, October 17, at P and G Hospital in Abule-Egba, Lagos State. The suspect allegedly stuffed pieces of cloth under her clothing to fake a pregnancy, while another woman posed as someone who had accompanied her to assist with childbirth, in an attempt to leave with a newborn.

Hospital workers and patients grew suspicious, confronted and restrained the woman, preventing the baby from being taken. Videos from the scene showed the pieces of cloth falling to the floor as she was held down, before she was escorted into a vehicle.

Lagos State Police Command spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi confirmed the incident on October 18, saying the suspect remained in custody while efforts were ongoing to apprehend her fleeing accomplice, and that she would be charged to court once investigations were concluded.

A similar case was reported in 2023: 49-year-old Modinat Faniyi was arraigned before the Yaba Magistrates' Court for allegedly attempting to steal a newborn at Ahmadiya Muslim Hospital in Ijaiye-Ojokoro, Lagos, while the baby's mother was asleep. She was charged on a one-count charge of attempted theft.
