NAFDAC seizes ₦300m of banned sachet drinks in Lagos markets

Nigeria's food and drug regulator NAFDAC seized alcoholic drinks worth about ₦300 million packaged in banned sachets and sub-200ml bottles at three Lagos markets, arresting distributors.
Why it matters
NAFDAC, Nigeria's food and drug regulator, said the operation enforces the federal ban in effect since January 1, 2026 on alcoholic drinks sold in sachets and PET bottles below 200ml — small, cheap and easily concealed packages with high alcohol content. The seized goods are valued at an estimated ₦300 million.

In a statement shared on its official Facebook page on Sunday (Oct 4), NAFDAC said enforcement teams swept three markets in Lagos State: Ile-Epo Market, Ojuwoye Market in Mushin, and Oke-Arin Market on Lagos Island. Officials evacuated several cartons of alcoholic drinks packaged in sachets and sub-200ml PET bottles; distributors and retailers were arrested during the Ile-Epo operation.
Investigations showed some distributors and retailers were hoarding the prohibited products amid rising demand and prices. NAFDAC stressed the ban remains in force and warned operators against selling, distributing or hoarding the products. Manufacturers had previously been given years of grace and ordered to recall the products nationwide or face facility closures.
