Lagos: NAFDAC seizes 100-plus sacks of empty bottles in Agbado house suspected of feeding fake alcohol trade

Nigeria's NAFDAC says it uncovered more than 100 sacks of empty branded alcohol bottles in a residential building at 322B Meiran Road, Agbado Oke-Odo, Lagos, suspected of being stockpiled for counterfeit drink producers, and destroyed them on the spot.

Why it matters

Nigeria's National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) says it has uncovered more than 100 sacks of empty alcohol bottles in a residential building in Agbado Oke-Odo, Lagos, suspected of being stockpiled to supply counterfeit drink producers. Officers destroyed the bottles to stop them being reused.

Kunle Ojo, an Assistant Director in NAFDAC's Investigation and Enforcement Directorate, said in a video from the operation that it followed credible intelligence. The building at 322B Meiran Road, Agbado, sits in a secluded residential area; bottles of different sizes and brands were stacked there, some under tarpaulins, including Action Bitter and bottles labelled Royal Circle Premium Whiskey.

What is and is not established

Ojo called the use of a residential building for such activity unacceptable and said the agency is working to protect public health, urging residents to report suspicious activity to the nearest NAFDAC office. Note the limit of what is established: the public record shows empty bottles seized and destroyed; it does not establish that counterfeit drinks had already been produced at the site, and the stockpiling purpose remains the agency's suspicion.

It is the latest in a run of NAFDAC counterfeiting actions in Lagos; this site reported on Oct 22 that the agency sealed an illegal herbal factory in Agege over a falsified registration number, another case turning on fake labelling. Buyers should stick to legitimate outlets and watch for packaging anomalies.
