Lagos: NAFDAC Seals Illegal Herbal Medicine Factory in Agege Over Falsified Registration Number
Nigeria's NAFDAC on October 22 sealed an illegal herbal products facility in Agege, Lagos: three variants of "Asheitu Adams Bitters" carried registration number A7-1827L, which belongs to a registered cough syrup; the facility manager was arrested.
Why it matters
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Thursday, October 22, raided and sealed an illegal herbal product manufacturing facility in the Agege area of Lagos State. Investigators found three variants of "Asheitu Adams Bitters" bearing NAFDAC registration number A7-1827L, but verification through NAFDAC's NAPAMS portal showed the number belongs to Greentol Cough Syrup, a registered cough syrup — confirming fraudulent use.
What was found
NAFDAC said the operation followed a Guardian report (October 10) on herbal products carrying falsified registration numbers; its enforcement team conducted surveillance before locating the facility. The three products were marketed for sexually transmitted diseases, blood purification and high blood pressure, and were produced in unhygienic, open-air conditions inside a residential building. The facility manager, 39-year-old Abdullazeez Saidu, was arrested for further interrogation; the company's Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer was absent during the operation.
Official appeal
Pharm. Edith Joseph, Deputy Director in charge of the Pharmaceutical Division at NAFDAC's Investigation and Enforcement Directorate, said the facility was unapproved and described the production water and environment as shocking. NAFDAC urged the public to report suspected illegal manufacturing on 0800-1-623322 or 0700-1-623322, or by email to [email protected]. This is the agency's second Lagos enforcement action in less than a week, after it uncovered a suspected counterfeit drinks factory at the Trade Fair Complex.
