Lagos hit by outages as Nigeria's power generation crashes from 3,840MW to under 500MW

· N GLOBE

Around noon on October 19, national generation fell from about 3,840MW to 476.70MW, cutting power in Lagos, Oyo and Osun; NISO denies a full grid collapse, blaming localised tripping, while Ikeja Electric apologised to customers.

Why it matters

Nigeria's national power grid suffered another major incident on October 19: data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) shows generation dropping from about 3,840MW at 7am to 476.70MW by 1pm, a fall of more than 3,300MW, with several major plants recording zero output.

Residents of Lagos, Oyo, Osun and other areas experienced power trip-offs around noon, with many consumers reporting interruptions on social media between about 12:45pm and 1:20pm. Ikeja Electric, the distribution company covering Lagos, issued a statement on October 19 saying reduced supply hours were due to a shortfall in power allocated from the national grid, apologising for the inconvenience and pledging to engage stakeholders to restore supply.

Full report

The NISO dashboard showed major stations including Egbin, Jebba, Shiroro and Kainji at zero generation, with only a handful — Odukpani NIPP, Omotosho and Sapele — still contributing limited output. At about 1:23pm, national generation hovered around 480MW with only five generating companies on the grid.

NISO, however, dismissed claims of a national grid collapse. A senior official said there was "no disturbance at the moment," attributing the drop to localised technical tripping and regional system anomalies, and said technical teams were deployed for rapid diagnostics. The incident is believed to be the first of its kind since Joseph Tegbe became Minister of Power in May 2026 — he had promised to make such disruptions a thing of the past. On September 30 the federal government began building a new National Control Centre in Osogbo, Osun State, to replace the existing 64-year-old facility.
