Why it matters

Nigeria's National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) announced on Sunday it had intercepted illicit drugs valued at over N7.1 billion (about $9.2 million) at two Lagos ports, with dozens of suspects arrested in coordinated operations across six states.

The largest seizure: 8,725 kilogrammes of powdered tramadol worth more than N6.98 billion at Apapa Port. The consignment, imported from India and declared as maize starch, was uncovered on October 2 during a joint examination by NDLEA operatives, the Nigeria Customs Service and other agencies at the APM terminals; a forensic laboratory test confirmed it was tramadol hydrochloride. On October 14 the consignment was separated from its concealment — 349 bags in total.

Other operations included a raid on Idumota Market on October 14, where Elizabeth Chidera Kalu was arrested and 10,600 ampoules of diazepam injection plus 6,500 tablets of Molly were recovered; the arrest in Mushin on October 15 of two 35-year-old men with 59.95kg and 61.23kg of skunk respectively; and the interception of a drug-laden truck along Iyana Oba, with loading manager Tajudeen Adeduntan and his assistant Azeez Sikiru arrested.

The agency's Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, said the operations spanned Lagos, Kano, Edo, Ondo, Bauchi and Kaduna states as part of a nationwide effort against drug trafficking networks.
