The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), in a statement signed Sunday, October 4, by its Director of Media and Advocacy Femi Babafemi, announced that operatives intercepted drugs worth more than ₦5 billion at ports in Lagos and Rivers State, and arrested a businessman allegedly smuggling cocaine at Lagos airport.
On September 27, 38-year-old businessman Philip Tunde was arrested at the joint screening point of Terminal 2 of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, while preparing to board a Royal Air Maroc flight to Milan. A search recovered 16 parcels of white powdery substance hidden in the soles of eight pairs of trainers and canvas shoes, and 195 wraps concealed in the railings of four travelling bags — confirmed as cocaine weighing a total of 4.80kg.
Tunde told investigators he paid ₦16 million in cash for the cocaine hidden in the shoes, while the consignment in the bags was meant for delivery to his business partner in Italy. He claimed the money was raised from compensation he received after sustaining an injury at a plastic manufacturing company in Italy, where he lost the tips of two fingers.
At the Apapa Port in Lagos, NDLEA operatives working with the Nigeria Customs Service and other stakeholders examined two containers shipped from Bangkok, Thailand, recovering 161 parcels of "Thai Loud" cannabis weighing 124kg and valued at ₦372 million, concealed inside two refrigerators and two cartons. At the Onne Port in Rivers State, two watch-listed containers yielded 40 packs of Loud weighing 22kg and 109,600 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup weighing 16,440kg.
