Why it matters
At 7:00 p.m. tonight (Saturday, October 17), the historical stage masterpiece "ODIGBOSE: THE PLAY" premieres at Agip Hall, MUSON Centre, Lagos Island. Written by tourism and cultural entrepreneur Otunba (Dr) Olawanle Wanle Akinboboye and produced by Atunda Entertainment, it is billed as "The First African Account of the Slave Trade" — Africa reclaiming its voice to tell the story of the transatlantic slave trade in its own rhythm, with its own tears and its own truth.
Full report
The production promises a deeply moving theatrical experience through powerful dramatic performances, traditional chants, African music, dance and storytelling, portraying the capture, chaining, agony and forced transportation of Africans while illuminating the resilience, courage and unbroken spirit of a people. The producers say the play aims beyond entertainment: to invite reflection on the human cost of slavery, to strengthen historical awareness among younger generations, and to encourage Africans to preserve collective memory through authentic African voices.
