Sanwo-Olu Orders LAWMA Chief's Resignation Over Lagos Waste Crisis, Reports Say

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reportedly asked LAWMA managing director Muyiwa Gbadegesin to resign after the waste collection crisis failed to improve. The state government has not confirmed the move.
What happened
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu reportedly asked the managing director of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, to resign over the weekend, according to an agency insider who spoke to PUNCH Online on Monday (Oct 19). The governor is said to be increasingly dissatisfied with the slow pace of waste evacuation and Gbadegesin's alleged failure to act promptly on directives. Afripost separately reports that Dr. Hassan Sanuth has been lined up as the new managing director.
Why it matters
About a month ago, Sanwo-Olu visited the Olusosun dumpsite in Ojota and declared a state of emergency on waste collection, partly blaming private sector participation (PSP) operators for failing to meet their obligations. He demanded immediate, medium-term and long-term measures to improve sanitation — yet a month later the situation has not improved, triggering the reported shake-up.
Full report
Residents across Lagos have complained since August 2025 of refuse piling up along streets, medians and drainage channels in Mushin, Surulere, Ajegunle, Ikorodu, Apapa, Mile 2 and other areas. Collection companies say days-long queues to offload at Olusosun and poor access roads are among the bottlenecks. As of Oct 20, the Lagos State Government had not officially confirmed the resignation.
