Lagos tops Nigeria's voter register with 7.49 million as INEC unveils updated roll

Less than a year before Nigeria's 2027 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has unveiled a cleaned-up national voter register of 103,428,715 voters, with Lagos firmly on top at 7,488,633 — nearly 920,000 ahead of second-placed Kano (6,570,276), followed by Kaduna (4,662,640).

INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan announced the figures at a press conference in Abuja on October 6, after a three-phase Continuous Voter Registration exercise that drew about 10.6 million fresh applicants and a biometric deduplication clean-up. By zone, the North-West leads with 25,083,411 voters (24.25%), followed by the South-West with 19,614,274 (18.96%). Men account for 53,528,218 voters (51.75%) and women 49,900,497 (48.25%), with the 35–49 age group the largest at 43.2 million.
INEC said distribution of newly issued Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) begins October 9 across all local government areas, while the register will be displayed for public scrutiny and claims or objections from October 9 to 15. The final register will be presented to political parties on December 15.
