Two-day downpour floods Lagos corridors, strands commuters in hours-long gridlock

Rain for a second day flooded Marina, Oshodi, Ikeja and other Lagos districts; commuters were stranded for hours. The state government says the situation is under control and blames refuse dumping; NEMA issued water-safety guidance.
Why it matters
Lagos's drainage system is overwhelmed almost every rainy season, but this two-day downpour directly paralyzed several commercial and transport hubs. With both the state government and the federal emergency agency responding, the authorities are treating this as a major public-welfare event.
Full report
The rain began around noon on Thursday, Oct 22, pounding the metropolis for about three hours, and continued into Friday, Oct 23 — the second day — affecting Lagos and parts of Ogun State. Worst hit were Marina, Mushin, Oshodi, Ladipo/PWD, Agege, Gbagada, Iyana-Ipaja, Mile 2, and in Ikeja, Awolowo Way, Oba Akran, and Ikeja-Along on the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway. Several Marina car parks were submerged with vehicles parked inside.
Commuters were stranded for hours, commercial motorists hiked fares, and many trekked long distances; heavy-duty vehicles, convoys, and security vans were also trapped in the gridlock.
Government response
Joe Igbokwe, Special Adviser on Drainage Management to the Lagos State government, said the situation was under control and that the authorities had expected the roughly three-hour flash flood. He blamed indiscriminate refuse dumping, local councils abandoning tertiary-drain clearing, and people building on drainage channels ("Our bulldozers cannot even access the canals sometimes"), urging environmental-law enforcement around the Ojota Bridge canal.
Ibrahim Farinloye, Acting Assistant Zonal Coordinator (Southwest) of the National Emergency Management Agency, issued safety guidance: "once the rainwater gets to half of the wheels, it sweeps off your vehicle… park and move on to higher ground." He listed high-risk LGAs: Lagos Island, Eti-Osa, Alimosho, Amuwo Odofin, Ikeja, Ojo, Kosofe, Apapa, Epe, Oshodi-Isolo, Shomolu, Surulere, and Ajeromi/Ifelodun.
