London's Barclays to Cut 5,000 Jobs as AI Boosts Productivity; CEO Calls AI the 'Icing on the Cake'

· N GLOBE

Barclays announced on October 22 it will cut about 5,000 roles, roughly 5% of its global workforce, with the CFO saying 'AI makes our people more productive' and 60% of cuts hitting support functions; the CEO called AI the 'icing on the cake' of tech modernization.

Why it matters

A major bank has drawn a straight line from AI to layoffs for the first time. Barclays says AI is making staff more productive and some roles redundant: 5,000 jobs, more than £1.1 billion in cost savings — the first time a bank has put its own numbers on AI's impact on financial-sector employment.

Full report

Barclays announced on October 22 that it plans to eliminate about 5,000 positions, roughly 5% of its 93,000-strong global workforce. About 1,000 roles already went in the first half of the year, with the rest expected by the end of 2026, as part of a plan to save more than £1.1 billion in costs in 2027.

Chief financial officer Anna Cross said around 60% of the cuts target support functions, 'including fewer developers, as AI makes our people more productive.' Chief executive C. S. Venkatakrishnan said years of technology investment were driving most of the efficiency gains, calling AI the 'icing on the cake.'

Barclays also reported third-quarter pre-tax profit of £2.3 billion, up 12% year on year, and announced a £500 million share buyback. Standard Chartered previously announced more than 7,000 job cuts over four years while ramping up AI use.

Barclays is reportedly expanding its partnership with Anthropic, aiming for half of its software developers to use Claude Code by the end of 2026; its Global Markets division already uses AI to process about 120,000 emails a day. Unions criticized the bank for cutting jobs while profits hit new highs, calling for fairer bank taxes.
