A 40-year-old man was shot dead at a memorial service in East Acton, west London, on Friday evening. The Met has launched a murder investigation and is appealing for witnesses; no arrests have been made.

Why it matters

A shooting at a memorial service — with dozens of people, including children, gathered to pay their respects — has shaken west London. Police are treating it as a targeted attack and are urgently appealing for witnesses, warning that “someone knows what happened.” No arrests have been made.

Full report

The Metropolitan Police said officers were called at about 7:47pm on Friday, October 2, after members of the public reported hearing multiple shots at the junction of Braybrook Street and Erconwald Street in East Acton, west London, near the Wormwood Scrubs playground.

Officers attended alongside the London Ambulance Service, but a 40-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene despite the efforts of medics. Police believe between 40 and 50 people, including children, had gathered for a memorial service when the shooting happened. A murder investigation has been launched, a police cordon remains in place on Braybrook Street, and a post-mortem examination will be scheduled. The victim's family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers. No arrests have been made.

Detective Chief Inspector Brian Howie, who is leading the investigation, said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of a man whose life was taken in a senseless act of violence.” He appealed to anyone who was around Erconwald Street, Braybrook Street, the surrounding roads or the Wormwood Scrubs playground between 6pm and 8pm on Friday to come forward — including anyone with photographs, video, dashcam, doorbell or mobile phone footage, or who saw anything suspicious on social media.
