This year marks 35 years since the Gulf War and 15 years since Iraq operations ended
This year's festival placed veterans' own stories at its centre, marking the 35th anniversary of the end of the First Gulf War and 15 years since the end of Britain's operations in Iraq under Operation Telic, in which 179 British personnel died. Charles has been patron of the Royal British Legion since 2024. The festival is not a state ceremony, but it brings the Royal Family together with serving personnel, veterans and bereaved families for an evening of music and testimony.
National Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph on Sunday
On Sunday morning, the King will lead the nation in a two-minute silence at the National Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph in Whitehall, London; members of the Royal Family, the Prime Minister, senior politicians and faith representatives will lay wreaths, and around 10,000 veterans will take part in the march past from 11:25 a.m. About 6,500 UK Armed Forces personnel remain deployed on operations overseas. The government said Whitehall will open to the public from 8 a.m., and the service will be broadcast live by the BBC, ITV and Sky News.
