London drivers to save up to £300 on home EV charger installations

· N GLOBE

From October 21, UK drivers can save up to £300 on home charging installations as planning permission is scrapped for cross-pavement chargers, letting London households without driveways charge at domestic rates as low as 2p per mile.

Why it matters

As of October 21, UK drivers can save up to £300 on home charging installations. The government has removed planning permission requirements for cross-pavement chargers — which connect homes to vehicles parked on the street — allowing households without driveways to charge at domestic electricity rates, as low as 2p per mile.

The change is part of the government's 'everyday fixes' strategy to ease financial pressure on households. UK electric vehicle sales are surging: September 2026 marked another milestone, with sales up 36% year on year and nearly 100,000 electric cars sold in a single month.

Full report

Buses and Local Transport Minister Simon Lightwood said: "We're saving drivers up to £300 off the cost of installing home charging by cutting unnecessary red tape. The EV transition is in full swing – sales are up 36% on last year, and over 190,000 have saved thousands making the switch in the last year alone." He added that cross-pavement charging gives residents without off-street parking the chance to benefit from lower domestic electricity rates, potentially saving them up to £1,750 in running costs.

Background

The government's Electric Car Grant (ECG) has enabled over 190,000 drivers to save up to £3,750 when purchasing a new electric vehicle.

The change matters especially in London, where on-street parking is widespread: many residents of terraced houses and flats who previously had to rely on more expensive public charging because they could not install a private charger can now run a cable straight from home.
