New beach hazards statement for Los Angeles County: big surf, 7-foot tides and rip currents through Tuesday evening

· N GLOBE

The National Weather Service issued a fresh beach hazards statement for Malibu and Los Angeles County beaches on Sunday at 9:02 p.m., in effect until 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct 13; morning high tides will peak at 7.1 to 7.3 feet, with minor coastal flooding possible.

Why it matters

The National Weather Service's Los Angeles/Oxnard office issued a new beach hazards statement for Malibu and Los Angeles County beaches on Sunday (Oct 11) at 9:02 p.m., in effect until 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct 13. The fresh advisory follows the expiry of the Oct 9 statement: dangerous rip currents and elevated surf are expected, with morning high tides peaking at 7.1 to 7.3 feet on Monday and Tuesday, plus large secondary high tides each evening.

Minor to moderate sea-water flooding is likely around high tide at low-lying beach and harbor areas, with enhanced beach erosion possible; the risk of significant damage is very low, but the drowning risk is elevated. Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea, waves can wash people off beaches and rocks, and small boats could capsize nearshore.

The NWS urges people to protect flood-prone property, never drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth, and — with hazardous swimming conditions — to stay out of the water or near staffed lifeguard towers; rock jetties can be deadly in these conditions, the agency warns.
