Los Angeles CicLAvia "Heart of LA": 6.5 miles of streets car-free today

· N GLOBE

The 68th open-streets event runs Sunday 9 a.m.–4 p.m., linking Echo Park, downtown, Chinatown and three more neighborhoods; free and open to all.

Why it matters

This is Los Angeles's largest car-free streets event of the year and the 16th-anniversary edition of CicLAvia. For one day, 6.5 miles of city streets become public space for people on foot and bikes — drivers near downtown should plan detours.

Full report

CicLAvia's 68th "Heart of LA" open-streets event takes place Sunday, October 11, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A 6.5-mile (about 10.5 km) route is closed to motor vehicles, connecting six neighborhoods: Echo Park, downtown Los Angeles, Chinatown, Little Tokyo, the Arts District and Boyle Heights. The event is free with no start or finish line — participants can join anywhere along the route to walk, jog, bike or skate.

Four hubs serve as gathering points: Echo Park (1632 Bellevue Ave), Chinatown (942 N Broadway), Little Tokyo (121 S Central Ave) and Mariachi Plaza (1801 E 1st St), offering water-refill stations, basic bike repair, first aid, restrooms and free pedicab rides. A kickoff news conference at 8:30 a.m. at the Echo Park Hub featured LADOT General Manager Laura Rubio-Cornejo, Councilman Hugo Soto-Martinez and CicLAvia organizers.

CicLAvia is a nonprofit that has staged more than 380 miles of open streets since its first event on October 10, 2010, drawing nearly 2 million participants. E-bikes must operate under human power on the route (Class 2 with throttle off, Class 3 with pedal assist off); the event runs rain or shine. Drivers should note streets are closed from about 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
