· N GLOBE

California authorities on October 16 announced a joint operation in downtown Los Angeles recovered about 3,000 feet of stolen copper telecom wire worth an estimated $102,000, with two arrests.

Why it matters

Copper wire theft in California has grown from scattered crime into organized infrastructure sabotage: officials say stolen cables have caused telecom and power outages and even disrupted 911 emergency communications. This seizure of roughly four tons of copper wire is one of the larger takedowns in the statewide crackdown.

What happened

The California Attorney General's office announced on October 16 that law enforcement conducted a joint sting in downtown Los Angeles, recovering about 3,000 feet (roughly four tons) of stolen telecommunications copper wire valued at an estimated $102,000, and arresting two suspects.

The operation was carried out jointly by the California Department of Justice, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and the Los Angeles Police Department, as part of a statewide push against copper theft and critical infrastructure vandalism. Officials said copper theft has caused multiple telecom and power disruptions and threatens the normal operation of the 911 emergency system.

What comes next

The two arrested suspects face charges related to theft and receiving stolen property. California authorities say they will continue joint operations targeting theft from telecommunications, power and other critical infrastructure.
