Los Angeles heat warnings last through Thursday, cooling from Friday with possible weekend rain

· N GLOBE

Extreme heat warnings for LA County last through Thursday; cooling begins Friday with possible weekend showers from Hurricane Rachel's moisture.

Why it matters

A long-lasting October heat wave is still bringing dangerous temperatures to Southern California, roughly 15 to 27 degrees above normal. Overnight lows are providing little relief, and public health officials warn of significant heat-illness risk for older adults, young children and outdoor workers.

Full report

Extreme heat warnings remain in effect through 8 p.m. Thursday for coastal and valley areas of Los Angeles County and coastal and inland Orange County. Highs Monday are expected to remain in the 90s to around 105 degrees in Los Angeles County. On Sunday, Hollywood Burbank Airport set a record high of 101 degrees, breaking the previous record of 100 set in 1964.

The immediate Los Angeles coast will gradually cool as sea breezes strengthen, but relief for most areas begins Friday. Forecasters expect more significant and widespread cooling Saturday and into next week, with a 20 to 30 percent chance of showers next weekend as moisture from distant Hurricane Rachel moves into the region.

Rachel is also generating elevated surf along the Los Angeles County coast, including Catalina Island. A beach hazards statement is in effect from 4 p.m. Tuesday through 11 p.m. Friday, with dangerous rip currents and abnormally high tides.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health urges residents to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activity during the hottest hours, and use air-conditioned spaces or cooling centers. Residents can call 211 to locate cooling facilities.
