LA vs Hate's new 'Text-to-Report Hate' service lets county residents report hate crimes, discrimination or harassment by texting 52211 in 15 languages, with photos and video attachable — unveiled during the ninth annual United Against Hate Week (Oct 18-24).

Why it matters

Los Angeles County residents can now report hate incidents by text message. The LA vs Hate initiative launched 'Text-to-Report Hate' on October 19: texting 52211 lets residents report hate crimes, hate incidents and bias-related harassment in 15 languages. It is aimed especially at immigrant and ethnic communities who may be uncomfortable making a phone call or filling out an online form.

Details

The service supports English, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Armenian, Farsi, Hindi, Japanese, Tagalog, Thai, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Russian and Arabic. After the first message, the system replies with automated questions in the same language: what happened, where and when, what type of hate or harassment was involved, and why the person believes they were targeted (race or ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, language or immigration status). Users can attach photos, videos, audio recordings and documents straight from their phones.

The service was unveiled at the San Fernando Valley Community Mental Health Center during the county's ninth annual United Against Hate Week (October 18-24). Robin Toma, executive director of the LA County Commission on Human Relations, said texting gives residents who won't call a convenient way to seek help. Since its launch in September 2019, LA vs Hate has received more than 3,600 reports.
